42. How to take care of lenses.

This is a topic I've been frequently asked about, because lenses are something you put on your eyes, and the eyes are a very sensitive part of the body. Nobody wanna damage their eyes! So this post won't just talk about lenses care, but also about how to take care of your eyes when you do use lenses, something very important!

Go to the optometrist. People usually buy random lenses on the internet, but you need to know that not everyone's eyes are the same. As well as your eyes can be bigger or smaller than others, there are some other differences you need to take into account if you wanna wear lenses.
• Most important ones are base curve, how much do your eyes tear, and if you have or not astigmatism. This last one is te most important one, because if you have astigmatism you need to buy some special lenses. You cannot wear some random ones or you'll seriously damage your eyes.
• Base curve is also important, because if you get a lenses with a base curve that don't fit yours, you're gonna be uncomfortable with them.
• Same happens with how much your eyes do tear, 'cause if your eyes doesn't tear enough, you'll need a lenses with a higher water content, and you'll probably need to buy, and take with you whenever you wear lenses, some collyrium to prevent getting your eyes dry.
• Also, if you need a prescription, you'll need to check it at the optometrist!

Don't buy at some random store. Since wearing color lenses or circle lenses has been getting pretty popular, there are a lot of stores that buy them. But be careful. There are TONS of stores that sell fake lenses. Is brand important in lenses? Yes, it is. Don't wear fakes.. Real lenses need to pass for a quality check before going into the market. As I said, the eyes are a very delicate part of your body, so every product for the eyes must be qualified. Fake lenses can damage your eyes badly, so before buying on a store, check on the internet and search for other customers reviews. The store I told about on the last post, BlingBlingEyes is totally certified, so it's totally safe buying there. I promise I'll do a deep research myself and I'll make another post with a list of safe stores and a list of the stores you should never buy in. :)
No uses imitaciones.

Be careful picking the lenses. This is not a "if you pick a very big lenses you're gonna look like an alien" advice. This has nothing to do with how big lenses do look or which color you should pick. This is about eye's health, so what you need to know is that the bigger the lens, the less oxygen to your eye. When picking a lenses, although is good to have a model to know how can possibly the lenses look in you eye, the most important thing is to think about your own eyes. A person with bigger eyes can get bigger lenses, but if a person with small eyes gets a bigger lenses, it'll be uncomfortable to wear, because the lenses would not be proportional to the eye, won't look nice, and what's more important, the eye will have less oxygen. Be careful with that, because if your eye gets no oxygen for a prolonged space of time can lead to a retinal detachment.
Escoge bien tus lentillas.

If you have astigmatism... You cannot wear normal lenses. The special lenses for people with astigmatism are called Toric Lenses, and most of the time, you cannot find big Toric lenses. Most of them are around 14 mm, they have very few selection when it comes to color or patterns and are more expensive than normal lenses. It's a pity, but that is better than damaging your eyes, don't you think?
④ Si tienes astigmatismo... No puedes llevar lentillas normales.

Check the lens.
• First important step it's to check you've got a real lenses and not a fake ones. Real ones come with an authentication stamp. I'm not sure about how every brand works with that, maybe you should check the brand page to be sure about it, but at least, when it comes to GEO ones, you have a stamp on the bottle and you have to scratch on some part of it to find the code, and then, if you introduce the code on the GEO page, it'll tell you if its a real one. If the code exists, it's real, if not, it's a fake. So be sure to check somehow if your lens are or not a fake.
• After that, you need to check the condition of the lens, like if the bottle is crack or broken, if the lens have nicks or tears, if both lenses share the same color or if the bottle is expired. If any of those happens, you should contact your provider shop about it, and they should give you another pair of lens...

About the expiry date. You need to know that the expiry date in the lens bottle are NOT the lens expiry date. That's the solution expiry date. The lens expiry date is one year, in most of the cases, but you need yo check that out when you purchase the lenses, before you open the bottle. If the solution is expired, and the lens are inside the bottle, then the lens is considered to be expired too.

Get your lens case ready. You need to get the lens case desinfected. That means putting it in boiling water to sterilize it and then washing at least twice with multipurpose solution to desinfect it. If the case is new, theorically you wouldn't need to sterilize with boiling water, but I do still recommend it.

Put the lens into the lens case and wait. I'm pretty sure you want to try your lens on as soon as you get it, but you'll have to let them rest into the lens case with multipurpose solution for at least 8 hours before wearing them. DON'T wear the lenses straight from the vial. The solution in the bottle is not multipurpose solution, is just some liquid that helps keep the life of the lens, so that liquid could damage your eyes, and that's why you need to let the lens rest at least 8 hours into the multipurpose solution in order to desinfect them.

Hygiene factor. Since lens are something you are gonna wear on your eyes, hygiene is very important.
• First step is never touch your lens without washing your hands, or any little impurity you have on them, can get to the lens and then to your eyes. So before touching the lens, wash your hands, and when you do it, it's better to do it with a neutral scentless soap, but that's not necessary, just a better option. Be sure to wash you hands well and remove all the soap.
• Dry your hands well before touching the lens, and never put the lens under water. Tap water may contain some impurities, such as lime, so when washing your lens, you hafta do it with multipurpose solution, not with water, and you hafta do that every time you take your lens off and every time before inserting them on your eyes.
① Factor higiene.

Insertion of the lens.
• When putting your lens on, it's important to remember washing them first with multipurpose solution.
• And inserting them before putting your make-up on. This way you prevent on ruining your make-up and also on getting som impurities on your eyes.
• When putting on your lens, if you have prescription, remember wich one goes in which eye, and always save them into the same lens case (I don't mean the whole case, but the right or left part of the case); R is for right one, and L is for left one.
• Also, be sure you have the lens on the right position, look at the picture:

How to put the lens. This really depends on each person, because you have to feel comfortable. My advice is just to try. If you do it many times, you'll end up finding the way of putting the lens you feel more comfortable with. But if you never tried lens on, here's a video to ilustrate how to put them.

Some advices
• When wearing lenses, if you feel any discomfort, just take them out, in other case, they may cause an irritation on your eyes.
• Don't wear them for more than 8 hours a day. As I told you, lenses restric oxygen to your eyes, so if you wear them for too long, your eyes may get red because the lens is drying out, and also your eyes since oxygen can't reach to them. Also, try not to wear your lenses everyday, your eyes need some rest.
• And if your eyes don't tear much, you may feel uncomfortable because you'll feel your lens and eyes dry sooner, so it's better that you carry around some collyrium. Go ask your drug store and tell them about your problem, so they can recommend you a good one.
• I would also recommend you to carry around a lens case, a little mirror and some multipurpose solution, in case you need to take off your lens.
• This may sound really obvious, but don't sleep with your lenses NEVER. They will dry out your eyes and may rip off some layer of your cornea.
• Replace the solution in your lens case everytime you do use lens, don't use it twice.
• Don't swim with lens or wear them on a sauna.
• And don't share lens, never.
• And as for how to remove the, the video also ilustrates that! Check it :) And remembder you hafta wash them with solution before putting them on the lens case!

④ Algunos consejos
• No compartas lentillas, nunca.

So finally, if you still have any doubt about lenses, care, how to wear or anything, feel free to ask me, you can also send me a PM if you don't wanna do it with a public comment! :)
